Frequently Asked Questions
What are these thrust washers for?
These phosphor bronze washers, or shims, are placed between the primary gear and the C-clip and washer on the 1275 classic Mini crankshaft. Different thicknesses are available to adjust the end float of the primary gear.
What end float should I aim for?
On a standard helical-cut primary gear, the factory recommended end float is 0.0035-0.0065". For full race use with straight-cut drop gears, we would open this up to 0.006-0.008".
How will I know which thrust washer to choose?
Dry build the engine and check the primary gear end float. If it needs adjustment, measure the existing thrust washer with a micrometer, and see how much thicker it will need to be to make up the correct end float. Or if you'd like a large range, we can also supply a complete set.
Is it vital to get the primary gear end float correct?
Yes, if it is too tight, when the engine gets up to temperature, the primary gear can bind up on the crankshaft and you will not be able to disengage the clutch. If it's all too loose, premature wear will occur.
Will these suit all Mini crankshafts?
Only the 1275cc engine. The small-bore Mini crankshafts have a smaller diameter here.
