Description

An essential modification when building any race engine, where high crank case pressure can often cause problems with standard gaskets and fixings.


This kit helps prevent such problems occurring by using high quality laser-cut copper gaskets along with our larger 5/16-inch Allen cap bolts and studs.




The block will need drilling and tapping for the larger 5/16-inch UNF studs and screws and the gearbox mounting holes will also need drilling to a larger to suit.

What is the benefit of the 5/16" sump conversion on the classic Mini?

This conversion enlarges the fixings between the classic Mini A-Series engine block and transmission housing. The larger threads are much less susceptible to stretch than the standard fixings, giving a stronger clamping force. This is especially useful on competition engines with increased power output and higher crankcase pressure. Combined with the copper gasket, this avoids the common problem where the standard gaskets blow out between the engine and gearbox.

How easy is this conversion?

A competent DIY engine builder should be able to perform this upgrade at home, but a suitable pillar drill will be essential. We have recorded a video on how to perform a 5/16" sump conversion if you check the Youtube link above. Otherwise, most engineering shops will be able to help with this quite easily.

How thick is the copper sump gasket?

These crush to 0.009-0.010", which is the same as most paper sump gaskets - just much stronger!

Can I re-use the gaskets?

Yes you should be able to refit and use the gaskets more than once if carefully dissembled, although some engine builders prefer to fit a new set each time.

Do you need to use any sealer on the gasket?

We would recommend that you use a light wipe of grease here, not silicone.
