Description

All MED scatter pattern race camshafts are machined from cross-drilled blanks at Piper Cams, then ni-tempered for extra durability.

Our profiles have been carefully developed over many decades of competition engine building, with great success around the world.

5-port race cam profiles;

  • MED 310SP - 310 duration, 0.420" lift - highly popular race cam

  • MED 320SP - 320 duration, 0.420" lift - slightly more aggressive

  • MED FIA+ - 296/312 duration, 0.400" lift -  historic cam for larger H6 or Weber 45DCOE carburettors

  • MED STR930 - 300 duration - Mini Miglia profile

8-Port specific cam profiles;

  • MED 8-PORT1 - 300 duration 8-Port, road/rally

  • MED 8-PORT2 - 310 duration 8-Port, race/trackday/sprint

  • MED 8-PORT3 - 320 duration 8-Port, full-race specification

We can also supply the 5-port cams within an MED race cam kit to save costs on the complete assembly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which camshaft should I choose?

Arrow

We've given a rough outline of the available profiles, above, which should help with selection. If you'd like more detail on a specific application, please get in touch and we'd be happy to help. The FIA15+ and 310SP are our most popular race camshaft profiles for the A-Series engine.

Are these 'scatter cams'?

Arrow

The 310SP, 320SP and FIA15+ are what's known as scattered, hence the 'SP', with re-phased timing on cylinders two and three compared to one and four. In extensive race engine testing, we have found this setup to be highly effective on cams with such long duration, thanks to unusual nature of the five-port cylinder head.

What timing figures should I use on the camshaft?

Arrow

Each cam is supplied with a specific setup sheet in the box. If you're unsure or need further advice, please get in touch.

Which engines will this fit?

Arrow

All BMC A-Series and A-plus engines, with the exception of eight-port head conversions. Standard 850 engines do not use camshaft bearings, so you will need to line-bore the block and fit bearings to run one of these cams.

Do I need double valve springs?

Arrow

Yes we would highly recommend a set of our specific race double valve springs, which give 245lb.ft seat pressure at 0.500" lift.

Can I use a race cam in my road-going A-Series engine?

Arrow

Like many classic Mini modifications, it has been done over the years, but we would not recommend it. The long duration and high lift lends these camshaft profiles to engines capable of high RPM. As such, on a road A-Series engine, the powerband will be severely limited by the smaller ports in the head and lower RPM potential of a standard crankshaft. Unless the engine and cylinder head are equally racy, it will not work well at all.

What makes the 8-port cams different?

Arrow

On an Arden 8-port head, the inlet and exhaust valves are re-ordered, so the cam profile is completely different to suit. These cams will only work with the 8-port head.
