MED MPI MINI CAMSHAFT
Description
All MED camshafts are machined from cross-drilled steel blanks by Piper Cams, never re-profiled, so you can be assured of the highest quality product.
The MED MPi camshaft has been designed specifically for the 1996-2000 Rover Minis with multi-point injection, with two additional lobes for the cam sensor, and the distributor drive removed.
This camshaft gives a similar performance to our MED HT (High torque) profile, which works particularly well for fast road engines without upsetting the idle. To keep emissions in check, we would recommend the use of our 1.3 rockers with this camshaft rather than 1.5:1 ratio.
- MED MPi - An excellent road camshaft, 252/264 duration with a power band from 1500-6500rpm
This cam is also available as one of our Stage 1-3 kits.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is this camshaft designed for?
It is specifically designed as an upgrade for the multi-point fuel injected Rover Minis, from 1996 to 2000. These cars are easily identified by the front-mounted radiator, high-mount alternator and lack of distributor on the front of the block.
How much power can I expect?
It's impossible to answer without knowing the exact spec of the engine and the quality of the rebuild. However, for a rough guide, when combined with a modified head, ITG air filter and roller rockers, we would expect to see around 80-85bhp from an MPi Mini on the standard injection system.
Can I change the camshaft in situ?
No, you will need to remove the engine to change the camshaft on an MPi Mini.
What else will I need to accompany the MPi Mini cam upgrade?
We would recommend opting for one of our complete cam kits, as these come with new followers, oil pump and timing disc. Stage 2 comes with an adjustable vernier to accurately time in the camshaft, Stage 3 gives an option for MED roller rockers too.
Do I need double valve springs?
Ideally, yes. Our uprated road spring sets are highly recommended to remove the chance of valve bounce at higher RPM. These are available separately or as the Stage 2 camshaft kit.
Do you have any more options on camshaft for the MPi Mini?
This is the only profile we keep for the MPi, but it works incredibly well for these cars. If you need a more extreme camshaft, perhaps for race use, it's unlikely you will retain the standard injection system, so the MPi-specific cam wouldn't usually be necessary. Please contact us if you're unsure.
What's different to a regular A-Series camshaft?
The MPi Minis run an electronic camshaft sensor, so the cam needs two extra lobes for this, while the teeth for the distributor drive spindle are no longer required.
I have a late model Japanese export Mini, which camshaft do I need?
The Japanese export Minis all used an SPi injection system, so will not need an MPi camshaft, despite the '96-00 Minis having an MPi engine block. For tuning on all Japanese export/import Minis, look instead at our regular fast road A-Series camshafts, such as the HT or RS profile.
