Description

These uprated gaskets consist of three thin steel shims, riveted together to form a thickness of 0.030-inch. This particular gasket is custom-made by Cometic to suit 1275 engines offset bored to 73.5mm.

The dry-deck gasket is unique to MED and features blank water gallery holes, saving much machining time and cost on blanking the original water galleries in the block.

Tech specs:

    • 73.5mm offset bores to suit 1380/1460 competition engines

    • 0.030" thick

    • 3.15cc crushed volume

    • Dry deck or regular style

    • Multi-layer steel gasket

    • Stainless steel outer layers coated for high temperature/chemical resistance

    • PTFE topcoat for resistance to fret and improved cold sealing

We also keep a version for the BMW K1100 motorbike head conversion, which is slightly thicker at 0.052-inch.

It's recommended to lightly file of the edge of engine number tag location - just enough material for the gasket to sit flush.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which A-Series engines does this gasket suit?

Arrow

This steel-shim gasket is designed to suit any 1275cc engine, offset bored up to 73.5mm, for 1380cc. It will also suit 970 and 1071 Cooper S engines as these have the same bore size. Other uses include small-bore engines modified to suit a 1275 cylinder head.

Are there any specific fitting procedures?

Arrow

Both the head and block faces should be perfectly flat for the best seal. If the engine is being rebuilt, during machining of the block we would recommend counter-boring the main head stud threads. When installing the gasket, to avoid damage, ideally remove the head studs and place the gasket on the block, before refitting the studs. Torque the head stud nuts as per the workshop manual sequence, take the engine through a heat cycle and re-torque. The use of ARP studs will help to give an accurate torque setting.

What is the gasket thickness and capacity?

Arrow

This steel shim gasket is 0.030" thick when compressed and we would allow for 3.15cc when making your compression ratio calculations. The K1100 option is slightly thicker at 0.052", giving 5.46cc.

What is the difference between 'standard' and 'dry deck'?

Arrow

The dry-deck gasket has the waterways blocked, so you can machine the cylinder head and block to accept our MED-1930-DH dry deck hose adapters. The dry-deck conversion re-routes the flow of coolant to better regulate temperatures on competition engines. Using this gasket rather than blocking the head/block waterways is an easier option, and more easily reversible. If you have a regular engine setup, choose the standard option.

Do I need to modify the engine to suit?

Arrow

To allow the gasket to sit flat on the block face, you may wish to lightly modify the front edge of the engine where the standard engine tag is fitted. Carefully file this area for clearance for the rivet.
