Frequently Asked Questions
Which A-Series engines do these oil pumps fit?
We keep oil pumps to suit both 1275 engines, A+ and original A-Seres, plus small-bore engines - listed as 998. The higher capacity Turbo oil pump is required on 1275 turbocharged engines. All oil pumps now come with a slot drive rather than the early pin or 'spyder' star drive.
Do these pumps give a higher pressure than standard?
No, oil pressure is set by the oil pressure relief spring and ball/cup, rather than the oil pump itself. These pumps are perfectly suited to both road and competition engines.
What is meant by 'slot drive'?
This is the shape on the end of the drive pin, which fits into the slot on the vast majority of aftermarket camshafts. Early camshafts used a pin drive or 'Spider' drive oil pump, with a separate drive peg between the pump and cam. All MED camshafts have a slot drive to drive the pump.
What oil pressure should I be aiming for?
This can vary considerably depending on the temperature of the oil and oil type. We would typically like to see around 70-75psi when running, dropping as low as 25-30psi at idle when hot.
When should the oil pump be changed?
We would always install a new oil pump at each engine rebuild, as this plays a vital role of the health of the A-Series engine. It sees unfiltered oil straight from the sump, so is prone to wear faster than other components.
