Description

The MED Cam Timing Cover kit makes an attractive and purposeful upgrade over the standard steel covers. CNC machined from billet aluminium, the kit aims to eliminate oil leaks from this area, which are usually caused by a warped or damaged lip on the standard covers.

The removable top cover features a separate crankcase breather and replaceable oil seal.

The kit is suitable for our full range of adjustable vernier timing chain setups, installed without the tensioner.

Features:

  • CNC-machined and anodised aluminium casing

  • Removable top cover

  • 5/8-inch crankcase breather

  • To suit all MED adjustable vernier cam chain setups

  • Provision for MED crank position sensor or mechanical timing pointer

  • Suits standard and aftermarket crankshaft dampers

  • Supplied with all fixings and seals/gasket

Optional extras:

  • Timing light ignition pointer

  • Aluminium timing plate (Mini-fitment only)

  • Crank position sensor kit

Please note - this kit does not fit MPi Minis, as the crankshaft pulley sits further inboard and touches the outer cover.

If you wish to install the kit alongside distributor-less ignition, choose the CPS kit from the optional extras and you'll need the MED Flat Management Pulley.

See the video above for a fitting demonstration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this fit all A-Series engines or just classic Minis?

Arrow

As long as the timing chain does not have a tensioner installed, yes this kit will suit all A-Series engines, including inline applications such as Sprite, Midget and Minor. The only exception are MPi Rover Minis, the very last production cars, as these run a multi-rib lower crankshaft pulley and it fouls on the outer case.

What can be done if there's a timing chain tensioner installed?

Arrow

The MED duplex timing chain kits are designed to run without a tensioner, so we would recommend installing one of these timing setups instead if you wish to use the MED cam timing cover.

Is there a timing light pointer to help set the ignition timing?

Arrow

As standard, no, but we have an optional ignition timing pointer that can be bolted to the lower edge of the cover. This is not designed for the standard timing marks on the pulley, so rotate the engine to TDC and simply mark across to the pulley/damper as a reference point for your timing light. Be very careful not to use the standard pulley's timing marks, as these are unlikely to be in the correct position for the MED pointer and will give an inaccurate reading.

Is the alloy timing plate essential?

Arrow

No, you can use the standard steel back plate, but for use on a classic Mini this does make a nice upgrade while you're there. It's an extra step towards eliminating oil leaks from the timing cover and comes with studs and nuts in place of the standard fixings. The inline engines (MG Midget,Sprite etc) must retain the standard steel plate, as the front engine mounts attach here.

Which crankshaft pulley is this compatible with?

Arrow

The cover kit fits with the MED S damper, and MED 'flat management' pulley if you wish to run a mapped ignition system. It will also work with standard crankshaft pulleys. On some standard pulleys, you may need to remove the inner dust shield if this fouls the cover. These are usually only held on by three rivets and are not required here.

What's the benefit of this cam timing cover?

Arrow

The main aim is to eliminate the usual oil leaks from this part of the A-Series engine, as the standard timing covers can become warped on the mounting face when removed and refitted over time, or the fixings over tightened. Some standard covers seem to leak no matter what you try. These also look incredible, for a finishing touch to any high performance engine build.

Do I need to run a breather on the timing cover?

Arrow

It's a good idea on a high performance engine that may experience higher crankcase pressure. For competition use, ideally feed this breather back to an oil catch tank, or the rocker cover if you have this vented to a catch tank elsewhere. On a more standard engine with lower RPM and crankcase pressure, feeding the breather back to the carb may be a suitable alternative.

What size hose is required on the oil breather?

Arrow

5/8-inch or 16mm internal diameter hose that's oil and heat resistant. Be careful with your hose protection and routing.
