Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between the stage 3 and stage 4 camshaft kit?
Stage 4 is aimed towards competition A-Series engines, so we exchange the valve springs for our firmer race specification to cope with higher RPM. The followers are swapped out for lightweight versions with the oil lubrication holes, and the timing chain is our X-Lite race setup. In addition, we also upgrade the rockers to the top-spec LDX model.
Which camshaft should I choose?
We've given a rough outline of the available profiles, above, which should help with selection. If you'd like more detail on a specific application, please get in touch and we'd be happy to help. The FIA15+ and 310SP are our most popular race camshaft profiles for the A-Series engine.
Are these 'scatter cams'?
The 310SP, 320SP and FIA15+ are what's known as scattered, hence the 'SP', with re-phased timing on cylinders two and three compared to one and four. In extensive race engine testing, we have found this setup to be highly effective on cams with such long duration, thanks to unusual nature of the five-port cylinder head.
Can I mix and match this kit with other components?
Perhaps you'd prefer a cambelt timing kit or special offset LDX rockers for a particularly large valve head. Let us know and we can put together a more bespoke kit to suit.
What timing figures should I use on the camshaft?
Each cam is supplied with a specific setup sheet in the box. If you're unsure or need further advice, please get in touch.
How do you adjust the cam timing with the X-Lite timing setup?
The crankshaft sprocket features multiple keyway slots, so with some experimentation, move the crankshaft sprocket in relation to the camshaft sprocket to perfectly time in the camshaft. The vernier adjustable timing kits are easier to adjust, but this is super lightweight, retaining good longevity.
Will this kit suit all A-Series engines?
The Stage 4 kit is designed specifically for the 1275cc engine, not the small-bore, as the LDX rocker spacing will only suit a 1275-type head. This kit will suit original large-bore Cooper S engines, but you may need to drill and tap the block to suit the later type oil pump, if this has not already been done.
