Frequently Asked Questions

Which A-Series engines does this gasket suit?

Arrow

The Payen BK450 is designed to suit any 1275cc engine, bored up to 73.5mm for 1380cc. It will also suit 970 and 1071 Cooper S engines as these have the same bore size. Other uses include small-bore engines modified to suit a 1275 cylinder head.

What is the difference between Set 1 and Set 2?

Arrow

The inlet/exhaust manifold is different - Set 1 is made to match the standard size gasket, which will suit standard cylinder heads and those ported to a typical fast road specification. The gasket in Set 2 has much larger ports for full-race usage. If you check the sizes listed above, this should help.

Are there any specific fitting procedures?

Arrow

Both the head and block faces should be perfectly flat for the best seal. If the engine is being rebuilt, during machining of the block we would recommend counter-boring the main head stud threads. When installing the gasket, to avoid damage, ideally remove the head studs and place the gasket on the block, before refitting the studs. Torque the head stud nuts as per the workshop manual sequence, take the engine through a heat cycle and re-torque. The use of ARP studs will help to give an accurate torque setting.

What is the gasket thickness and capacity?

Arrow

The Payen BK450 is 0.040" thick when compressed and we would allow for 4.2cc when making your compression ratio calculations. If you need a smaller capacity, try our steel shim gaskets, which are 0.030" thick and offer between 3.01 and 3.15cc.
