IDLER GEAR BEARING
Description
Replacement needle roller bearing for the pin-type idler gear, straight-cut or standard helical.
We keep three different size bearings to suit A-plus engines, and A-Series with either a three or four-synchro gearbox.
Supplied individually - don't forget you'll probably need two, one for either side of the gear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do these bearings fit?
The idler gear is the middle of three drop (or transfer) gears that transmit power from the engine to the gearbox on the classic Mini. One of these bearings fits in the gearbox housing and other in the transfer housing.
How many bearings do I need?
There are two, so you'd usually change both.
How do I remove and refit these bearings?
The bearing in the transmission case is relatively easy to drift out and press back in. The transfer housing bearing can be difficult to remove. Ideally there is a specific bearing puller for the job, but you may need to get creative with removal, being very careful not to damage the housing.
When do I need to change these bearings?
Ideally these would always be renewed as part of an engine rebuild. As power levels increase, more strain is placed upon these bearings.
Is there an upgraded version?
These bearings are a high quality replacement for the standard items. If you are looking to install straight-cut drop gears, we would highly recommend the roller bearing idler gear conversion, which replaces these small needle rollers for a large heavy-duty shaft and bearing. This is much stronger.
